The Official Children of Tunare’s Wizard’s guide to Norrath The Master Written by : Goratrix I was sitting at my desk when a figure approached, dimming the already meager torchlight I was using to transcribe an old book one of the Masters had found in the new land. As I looked up to see who was impeding my tedious process, my scowl instantly dropped off my face when I saw the gold embroidered runes finely sewn into the neckline of the pristine flowing black robe, indicating that one of the Masters was in my presence. His tall stature and self confidence carried an unsettling air about him. He said, “Walk with me. We have much to talk about, Apprentice.” My quill hand jerked at the final word, spilling the bottle of ink all over the nearly finished page. My first thought was, “Apprentice? I’ve actually been accepted into the school!” Followed by, “Oh well, maybe I can get one of the Initiates to transcribe this now. If the Master will let me.” I slowly stood up, trying to be graceful, but not quite succeeding. He said “I shall be your mentor, until you feel that you no longer require guidance. But know that all Masters have heeded the words of those Masters who came before them, for they know much that would save you from your own demise, and can teach you things that would take lifetimes to discover. You are about to embark on a long journey. However, before you begin, you must know where you have been, before you know where you will go. First, you owe your power to the ancient known as Erud. Although you my not be descendant from him, your power is. It was his civilization, and the power that was discovered within it, that began the Age of Enlightenment. It was one of the best Ages yet known until those who offended the Gods chose to try and command the dead. This brought great strife among our kind, and great destruction to the world. The heretics were banished, but never eliminated, yet I digress. Now, we command much in this world through our powers. There are three main factions who command such power; Enchanters, Magicians, and Wizards. As a Wizard, we have chosen to focus on the one path that leads to true commanding of magic, that of evocation. Through this power you control the fate of many, not only yourself. For it is this skill above all that allows you to smite your enemies quickly, and with precision. The amount of damage you can deal to a group of enemies is unsurpassable by any other on Norrath, save the gods themselves. Even to a single enemy you are deadly. Now, do not be fooled for one moment that we have forsaken all other aspects of magic just so that we may destroy. Surrounding yourself in protective magics against enemies and using magic to evade enemies who are too strong are also important if you wish to live long enough to master these skills. There are those who would call us nukers in jest, for no other name could be closer to the truth. Yet they still awe at the sheer force we represent. Soon you will be taught your first spell. It will be a slow and arduous process to learn, but after you have done that you will be rewarded greatly. You will have to practice much to improve your skill, and it will not come easy. The process of channeling energy into casting is an exhilarating and fatiguing process, and you will only be able to handle so much. But as you progress you will be able to channel more energy, and with greater ease. After you have grasped the rudimentary of casting, you shall be taught how to meditate, to block out the outer world while you collect magic within you. But be warned that while meditating you are most vulnerable because you do not sense the dangerous world around you, be sure to find a place where you can be safe until you are ready. This lesson should bring an end to your dependence on me for guidance. Although you may call upon any Master to teach you additional skills, but they will decide when you are ready to learn them. This said, you must then go out on your own and choose your own life. I encourage you to find others to tread the path with you, as they can help you and protect you. Do not turn your back from anyone, as you would not want their back turned to you. My last piece of advice is this; avoid ambition. You will learn in your own way how to use your power best. But ambition will get you killed. Know your place and always deal the final blow. That said, I leave you this night hopeful that you will not falter in your pursuit of power, knowledge, and adventure. Now, I do believe you have to finish transcribing that book, a pity you spilled ink on that last page. I’m sure it took hours of work.” The slight smirk on his face was the last I saw of him that night as he waved his hands, reciting a chant, and vanished into the air. “Ha, I’m glad someone find’s my torture funny,” I said. “Oh, but it is” came his voice from the air, followed by the fading jingle of his money purse behind me as I stood there aghast.
