The Official Children of Tunare’s Ranger’s guide to Norrath Volume 1 Written by : Merelan Lightbow and Athme Hello and well met young ranger! You have chosen a fine solid class where you can support a group or solo the lands of Norrath. The first few levels will be tough but Mother Tunare will guide you through them. She has given you many gifts some from the warriors and spells from your brethren druids. Gifts from the warriors include taunt, kick, dodge, dual weld and double attack. May I suggest you put only one point in each of these skills, as they will increase many times fold as you use them. Taunt will aid you in a group to get the target’s attention off another party member. Kick is also useful as it gives you one more hit per round on the target (usually 5-9 points of damage depending on your strength.) Dodge does just that, allows you to dodge an opponents attack and that’s always good! Dual weld will allow you to hold a weapon in each hand and for this reason I suggest you stay away from 2 handed weapons. For the higher class ranger (level 20) Mother Tunare has given us the gift of double attack, that is to attack with our primary weapon twice per round. From our druid brethen we get spells starting at level 9. These spells may seem trivial but rest assured they are a mainstay of a ranger’s spellbook. Flame lick is a dot or damage over time spell and also lowers the armor class of the target. It’s component is the fire beetle eye found most commonly in Qeynos or Misty Thicket but can be purchased through other travelers of the lands. Snare is another common spell that aids us in battle. Victims…er targets tend to run after getting their arse beat up but snare will stop them in their tracks (or at least sow them down). This is very helpful in dungeons where they are more likely to recruit help from other orcs or gnolls. Mother Tunare has also given us the gift of healing, although minor healing at first, ANY healing spell is better than sitting on your arse waiting for health to creep slowly back into your veins! Skin like wood is a shield spell. It adds 10 hit points and gives you a higher armor class. Furthermore it’s a good buff to cast on any of your party members (note: spellcaster’s need all the hit points they can get!) It can also be cast on anyone you wish to help whether in your party or not. Endure fire is another shield spell that adds resistance to fire spells. This is good for fighting harpies and lesser drakes in steamfont and on any other creatures that cast a fire spell. There are many other spells I will go into them in greater detail at another time. If you need questions answered, just ask… Let me not forget the bow! A powerful weapon to a trained archer, a bow can be very useful in “pulling” a creature to a group or merely getting it’s attention. I recommend if soloing the lands of Norrath to use a combination of snare then shoot also known as “root-n-shoot” This will get your archery skill up as well as your casting at the same time! Now for some advise on pulling… archery or flame lick works well for this as it gets your target’s attention very fast (much faster then just running up and knocking it about a few times!) If you have traveled far from your group to find your target use tracking (another of Tunare’s gifts) to find your group again. Now after the battle and before you set off again please. PLEASE consult your mana-weilders on mana supply. If they report no mana or OOM (out of mana) you’d best sit and wait a bit before heading out again. You may even need to meditate a bit yourself; however it will not take you nearly as long to recharge as a true mana-weilder because they simply have more mana to burn. Usually waiting till a report of 80% is sufficient for you to go out and find another victim. Also give your party warming of your approach. Make a groupsay of “ incoming” or some such warning for your party to stand ready for battle. Above all keep your group together. A unified group is strong while each one separate is a lonely victim to the enemy! Also while traveling the lands practice your non-combat abilities such as forage and sense heading. Any time you are not fighting try your sense heading out you may not know what direction you are facing now but in time you will! Foraging at the lower levels you will most likely find grubs. Note: grubs are not for eating! Go fish! Take some time to go down to the docks or wherever the fish are, find a buddy and learn a language or two. Who knows, it may be useful someday! At higher levels you shouldn’t need to buy provisions at all. You may even be handing food out to hungry travelers just to empty your pack. Ah well ‘tis so much more to enlighten you on this is just the first edition of this guide. Level 15 and up should be soon to come. May Tunare keep you well and guide you in her path.
