Magicians’s guide to Norrath
Volume 5 - Grouping
Written by : Cadanyth

The Magician is one of the best classes to solo with, second only to the Necromancer. But hey, soloing is just plain boring, and as you reach advanced levels, it becomes easier to group with a friend.

I like to group with a cleric. It's tough to find a cleric around that isn't being founght over, but when you can group with one, the Mage and Cleric make a great team. With a cleric and a mage, you get all the basics, a tank (your elemental), a spell caster, and a healer. And all the experience you get is split between the 2 of you. A Ranger or Paladin also make good partners, but don't have the healing power a Cleric does.

A good Magicain uses very little of their mana during battle. They prepare all the required bandages, elementals, and weapons before the fight so as to limit the amount of mana required.

A good rule of thumb for casting damage shields is to cast it on the pulling tank BEFORE he/she pulls. This does two things, first it is hurting the creature the whole run back, and secondly it keeps the enemy nice and pissed with your tank because for everytime it hits him it takes damage. The creature doesn't look at this as damage you do, but as damage done by the tank. Just make sure you do this before the tank pulls. If you don't cast it ahead of time, its like casting heal on him, creatures dont care much for that.

Also, don't go in there nuking as soon as you see the creature being pulled in. Let the tanks hit it for a couple of rounds first. Then stay far back and nuke it a couple of times, take a quick med, till you think the creature has forgotten you, then blast it again. It is also a good idea to stay as far back as possible. Being farther back makes it less agravating for the creature because it doesn't notice that the huge ball of fire is coming from you so much as it would if you were toe to toe with it.

Other than that, just keep everyone, especailly the tanks, buffed and you'll be fine. The only direct burn class is wizards so remember we use most of our skills to turn the tides in our favor.
