The Official Children of Tunare’s Magicians’s guide to Norrath Volume 2 - The Early Years Written by : Cadanyth The early years of an apprentice Magician's training are trying to say the least. The cost of materials to summon your pets alone is a difficult problem. However, if done correctly, a mage can get through these first few levels faster than any other class. Lets begin with costs. Before you reach your next level make sure you know which spells you will want and have the money on hand to buy them. These spells are usually costly, so you might want to start saving a couple of levels prior to reaching the spell level. It is always disheartening when you have to hunt green creatures to get the money you need to buy the spells needed to hunt the creatures of your level. Secondly is the cost of malachite to summon your pets. It is by all means worth every copper to bring as many as possible with you. The amount of time and lives saved by having a pet with you far outweighs saving a few silvers and not summoning your pet. In order to afford these costs, I recommend going to the pixie tower in lesser faydark as soon as possible. These little buggers will not only give you the silver to buy everything the young Magician needs, but they also will give the occasional malachite. Fighting solo at lower levels is a great possibility for the apprentice Mage. The ability to simply summon your tank not only means you get all the more loot, but also means you have to share less experience. While the Magicians pet does take some experience away from the Mage, this is very little compared to having a Warrior helping instead. Many people recommend that a Mage should have nothing to do with melee and just sit back and cast on the enemy while the pet takes all the damage. There are a few problems with this idea. First off, you tend to go through an ungodly amount of mana before you kill the creature. By having to kill the creature before it kills your pet, you must unleash everything you have at it fast. Secondly, you have more Hit points than your pet at these earlier levels, use that as a buffer to help keep your pet alive. Cast a spell or 2 at the monster then jump in with your pet and earn your share. And the Third problem with this is that you cant keep an eye on your pet too well when you have to keep the creature targeted to burn it. This meathod tends to get the pet killed before its half dead and having the target coming after the Magician. And we all know how well the Mage does in that situation. The Magician's pet makes the best support for retreating. Whether grouped or solo, the Mage's pet will fight to the death while the Magician and her group flees to safety. If the creature attacking the Mage follows, the whole time it has an elemental chasing it, taunting and attacking, very rarely will the creature not turn around to get the pesky elemental off of it, ignoring the Mage while she runs for cover.
