Magicians’s guide to Norrath
Volume 1 - The Mage
Written by : Cadanyth

The Magicians of Norrath are a powerful and under estimated class. We have the power to conjure anything from a simple loaf of bread to an Elemental the size of a Hill Giant. We are second only to Wizards at Direct Damage spells and have the best personal buffs in the game.

The different races of Magicians are High Elves, Dark Elves, Gnomes, Erudites, and Humans. The race you chose for you mage will have a great effect on how you play. The Erudite Mage tends to be more like a Wizard. They have alot of Intelligence so that means more mana to burn. Humans are the opposite. Having the least amount of mana, they are forced to rely mainly on their pets. The others are basically equal. Dark elves have problems with their evil alignment, High Elves resist magic better, and Gnomes, having higher dexterity, tend to hit more with their spells.

Becoming an experienced Magicain requires a great deal of time and hard work. Our spell lines develop more slowly than the other spell casting classes. We get Phantom Leather (+ ac) at 16, Elemental Shield (+ resistance to cold/fire) at 20, Malise at 24(- ac, str to target). Whereas the wizard has little new to look forward to other than new damage spells. Many poeple chose the path of the Magician early on and give up around level 7 or 8 when they notice the Magician has little more than the Wizard, who does 30% more damage per spell. Another short coming of the beginning Mage is that there are no new direct damage spells for level 12. Meaning that a level 15 Mage is using the same direct damage spell as a level 8 with only a few more points of damage per casting.

However, as the Magicain becomes more advanced, they can take on creatures that another class would tremble at. The reasoning for this is simple. Creatures become tougher and tougher to solo as their levels increase. The creatures of Norrath tend to have more hit points and do more damage than an equivelent level adventurer as they become more experienced. An example would me that a lvl 14 warrior could easily take down a minotaur, whereas a lvl 26 warrior would have problems doing this to a Chasm minotaur without help. Both are of equivalent levels, but the Chasm Minotaur would most likely have more Hit points than the warrior at the same level. The Mage also has this problem, but not her pet. The Mage's pet will have the equivelent Hit points and do the same amount of damage as another creature of the same level. Making it much easier for the Magicain to solo with her pet.

Many say that a Mage is most powerful when grouped. This is true in mant aspects. Damage Shields are well liked by Warriors, giving damage everytime they get hit. Mages can also summon bandages, throwing knifes, and arrows for the group. Our pets are useful in a group not only for fighting, but also for giving the group time to run if they get in over their heads.

However, a Mage is second only to a necromancer for soloing. The ability to create everything needed to survive Norrath, such as food, water, and bandages, comes easily to us Magicians. We also have the ability to cast the strongest pets available to any class. These pets can often take out creatures only a couple levels lower than its master without any help.

To sum it up, us Magicians are one of the more well-rounded classes in all of Norrath. As with all spellcasting classes, we cannot wield many weapons or wear heavy armor, but our elementals more than make up for this loss.
